Youth Empowerment & SuccessAt any given time, there are about 1,300 youth 16 years of age and older in substitute care in Central Texas. The YES program is aimed at improving youths' self esteem and enhancing their ability to make responsible decisions through training, mentoring and financial support. These programs strive to provide each youth with skills and resources they will need to be healthy, productive adults. Children who age out of the foster care system at age 18 are faced with the following statistics:
YES Mentoring ProjectThe YES Mentoring Project enrolls children 16 to 18 years old who reside in group homes or foster care in the Department of Family and Protective Services (Child Protective Services) system. The YES Mentoring Project works with CPS to identify the children who have the capacity to participate and are most at need. The program has an emphasis on financial literacy and follows a curriculum that covers banking, credit, saving, budgets, investing and much more. Through the program, each participant will receive a bank account with a stipend to complement the finanical literacy curriculum. The YES Mentoring Project will provide a well-trained, volunteer mentor for each child as long as needed until the child reaches the age of 18 years old with the opportunity for the relationship to continue on its own. The youth and their mentors will meet in small groups at least once per month to cover the financial literacy curriculum modules and other topics regarding preparation for adult living.
